DescriptionAWS is set to introduce the inaugural European Sovereign Cloud (ESC), marking a significant development in utility computing (UC). To spearhead this initiative, we are actively seeking experienced development engineering leaders with a strong background in both development management and operations expertise. As part of the AWS Managed Operations team, you will play a pivotal role in building and leading operations and development teams dedicated to delivering high‑availability AWS services, including EC2, S3, Dynamo, Lambda, and Bedrock, exclusively for EU customers. For more information on ESC please check out our blog: ResponsibilitiesOversee the expansion of the ESC in 2026/2027, working closely with AWS integral teams and influencing the evolution of AWS services and llaborate with technology leaders, contributing to the enhancement of day‑to‑day operations, and ensuring improvements in availability, reliability, latency, performance, and efficiency of the ESC.Manage teams in both systems operations and development, emphasizing automation and engineering efficiency.Lead your team in executing organizational and team roadmaps, focusing on automation goals.Regular check‑ins and strategic guidance to foster collaboration and shared success.Analyse systems and software performance, identifying areas for improvement and shaping strategies to enhance overall efficiency.Cross‑departmental collaboration is key: strengthen relationships with other teams, streamlining processes for optimal team functioning.Build coaching and mentoring programs to ensure a skilled and invested workforce.Regularly review key performance metrics to ensure the team's efforts align with overarching business objectives, fostering a results‑driven environment.Identify successes and areas for improvement,
ensuring your teams are well‑prepared for launch challenges and opportunities.This position may involve on‑call responsibility and escalation calls.Eligibility RequirementsFluency in written and spoken English.Candidate must be a national of an EU member state and residing in the EU to operate the AWS European Sovereign Cloud.Amazon will provide relocation support for successful applicants relocating within the European Union.Employees will participate in an on‑call rota.Basic QualificationsExperience in systems engineering and operations leadership for an Internet service or leading‑edge IT organization.Experience managing system or software development teams.Experience in agile software development methodology.Hands‑on experience in systems engineering and administrative work in networking, storage systems, and operating systems.This role requires you to be a national of an EU member state.Preferred QualificationsKnowledge of professional software engineering and best practices for the full software development life cycle, including coding standards, software architectures, code reviews, source control management, continuous deployments, testing, and operational excellence.Knowledge of systems engineering fundamentals (networking, storage, operating systems).Experience with Agile engineering practices (Kanban, continuous delivery, etc.).Experience with AWS platforms, services, and design patterns.EEO StatementAmazon is an equal opportunities employer.
