Laboratory Technician: Optical Packaging & Micro-assembly

Turn photonic chips into real devices with your own hands: wirebonding, fiber attach, and precision micro-assembly at a deep-tech start-up. About AGPhotonics

We are a dynamic, innovative technology company specializing in the development of advanced transceivers for optical wireless communications. We were born from a team of professors and former PhD students with more than 20 years of experience in the design and characterization of integrated photonic devices. Our mission is to advance the field of optical wireless communications by developing innovative transceivers based on photonic integration, enabling more compact, efficient, and capable systems.

The position

We are looking for a proactive Laboratory Technician with outstanding manual dexterity and a strong desire to learn, who wants to specialize in the optical packaging of photonic chips: the set of precision processes that turn a chip into a functional device. You will carry out micro-assembly tasks such as chip wirebonding, the alignment and bonding of optical fibers to the chip (fiber attach), and the assembly of opto-mechanical subassemblies, while also supporting the electronics laboratory and the engineering teams.

Your work will be essential in turning our designs into real, stable, and reliable devices. Above all, we value fine manual skill, patience, attention to detail, and enthusiasm for learning a high-precision craft in a technological, multidisciplinary environment. If you are a natural hands-on tinkerer who takes pride in meticulous, well-executed work, this position is for you. Main responsibilities

Wirebonding of photonic and electronic chips (training provided by the company).

Alignment (passive and active) and bonding of optical fibers to the chip, including handling of precision adhesives/epoxies and UV curing.

Micro-assembly of optical, photonic, and opto-mechanical components under the microscope: chip handling (die handling), precision positioning, and fixing.

Optical verification measurements during and after the packaging process (coupling losses, basic device characterization).

Support in the assembly and commissioning of experimental setups in the laboratory.

Preparation, cleaning, and maintenance of the work environment, tools, and equipment.

Basic inventory management and control of laboratory materials and consumables.

Documentation of processes, incidents, and results: assembly recipes, traceability records, and reports. Required profile

Outstanding manual dexterity and a steady hand for precision work under the microscope; demonstrable experience in meticulous work will be valued (micro-assembly, microelectronics, fine soldering, watchmaking, scale modeling, or similar crafts).

Higher-level vocational training degree (Ciclo Formativo de Grado Superior or equivalent) in a technical field (manufacturing, electronics, mechatronics, optics, chemistry, or related).

Previous experience in laboratory environments and with laboratory instrumentation.

Organizational skills, attention to detail, and commitment to safety and cleanliness standards (ideally, familiarity with cleanroom environments or willingness to be trained).

Ability to follow technical instructions and procedures rigorously, and to work both independently and as part of a team.

Good communication skills in English and the ability to write reports.

Knowledge of office tools (Word, Excel) and basic programming (Python) will be valued.

Previous experience in wirebonding, fiber attach, photonic/microelectronic packaging, or opto-mechanical assembly will be valued. What we offer

Permanent contract with a 6-month probation period, competitive salary, and performance-based bonus.

Specialized training in photonic packaging, a high-demand discipline with a very scarce pool of professionals in Europe.

Being part of a young, innovative team in a high-tech environment.

Working at an early-stage deep-tech start-up with a clear product focus and great career prospects for young, motivated, talented people.

Learning and development opportunities in real engineering projects.

Shortened continuous workday every Friday of the year and throughout the summer.

23 working days of vacation per year, plus official public holidays.

State-of-the-art equipment to support your work and maximize your productivity.

Great working atmosphere and adaptable hours. Interested?

Are you motivated by being part of an innovative technology project from its early days? Send us your application at https://ag-photonics.com/en/careers/ telling us who you are, what you have done, and what you would like to contribute.
