ABOUT THE PROJECT
TARRANIX is a cutting-edge R&D; initiative focused on developing next-generation photonic integrated circuits (PICs) for sustainable photonic computing. The project combines nanofabrication, photonic design, computing, and photonics within a multidisciplinary team of physicists, engineers, and material scientists.
The ultimate purpose is to design and fabricate the first worldwide domestic photonic computer.
As part of a small, highly collaborative team, you will contribute across different stages of the project—from simulation and experimentation to material analysis, integration with manufacturers, technical documentation, and communication with i nternational researchers, companies, suppliers, and external partners.
We are not looking for experts in every area, but for people with a strong foundation in photonics, a willingness to learn, and motivation to actively contribute to an ambitious technological project.
YOUR ROLE IN THE PROJECT
As a Photonics Researcher, you will be part of the scientific team responsible for the development, simulation, and validation of advanced photonic computing devices.
We are looking for a person with a strong background in photonics physics, capable of understanding the physical principles governing photonic devices, analysing their behaviour, and contributing new ideas and solutions.
As we are a small team, we are looking for an active and autonomous profile who does not only execute predefined tasks,
but also proactively participates in the evolution of the project, proposes improvements, and collaborates closely with the rest of the team.
MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES
- Participate in the design and development of integrated photonic computing devices and advanced optical architectures.
- Analyze physical phenomena such as interference, polarization, dispersion, optical losses, modal coupling and phase control.
- Contribute to the development of photonic architectures for optical computing and logic gates.
- Perform electromagnetic and optical simulations using tools such as MEEP, LUCEDA, KLayout, Tidy3D, Python or equivalent tools and programing languages.
- Analyze the relationship between physical parameters, device design and experimental results.
- Participate in the optical characterization and experimental validation of photonic devices.
- Collaborate in the study of materials and photonic platforms such as SiN, silicon or other functional materials.
- Coordinate and manage international stakeholder meetings and contacts.
- Contribute to technical documentation, project proposals, scientific publications and patent applications.
- Collaborate with external laboratories, technology suppliers and scientific partners.
REQUIREMENTS
- Degree in Physics, Applied Physics, Photonics, Optics or related fields.
- Strong knowledge of photonics physics, electromagnetism and optical devices.
- Experience or academic background in integrated photonics, optical simulation or experimental research.
- Knowledge of wave propagation, waveguides, optical coupling and photonic device behavior.
- Hands-on experience with optical-electronic lab setups, lasers, and measurement systems.
- Ability to interpret physical results and solve complex problems.
- Knowledge of scientific programming (Python, MATLAB or equivalent).
- Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
WE ESPECIALLY VALUE
- Master and/or Phd in photonics, nanomaterials or computing.
- Experience with integrated photonic devices, PICs or optical laboratories.
- Experience with FDTD/FEM simulations.
- Experience with photonic design and simulation tools.
- Scientific publications or participation in research projects.
- Integration of open-source RISC-V cores.
- Skils in Computing and ALU design
- Ability to propose ideas and explore new approaches.
- Curiosity, initiative and willingness to learn complementary areas.
- Ability to communicate technical results and participate in meetings with external collaborators.
POSITION DETAILS
- Annual gross salary: €30,000 (12 monthly payments), depending upon experience and confirmed grade.
- Performance bonus: 10% of annual gross salary linked to technical milestones and project validation.
- Access to advanced photonics equipment and collaboration with external laboratories.
- Integration into an interdisciplinary team of physicists and engineers.
