We are looking for an R&D; Packaging Category Expert to lead the innovation and standardization strategy for a category of packaging materials (e.g., cardboard/fiber or rigid/flexible plastics). The role balances sustainability, performance, cost, and machinability and drives the “pack‑machine fit” on high‑speed production lines across several European plants.
Responsibilities
- Category strategy & roadmap: Define and execute a materials plan (innovation, cost‑out, light‑weighting, sustainability/regulation), aligned with R&D;, Operations, Sustainability and the Business.
- Materials development & industrialization: Conduct scouting and proofs‑of‑concept; scale to plant with formal validations (FAT/SAT/VAT, industrial trials, line trials, run‑at‑rate), ensuring pack‑to‑machine fit on high‑speed lines.
- Specifications, quality & compliance: Create/update material specifications and drawings; define test methods (top‑load, compression, drop, transport) and manage change control with full traceability and applicable regulations.
- Technical sourcing & suppliers: Identify/approve/develop suppliers; agree technical criteria with Procurement, establish alternatives (dual‑sourcing) and manage performance (capability, stability, total cost of packaging).
- Plant continuous improvement: Drive OEE improvements, SMED for format changes,
and reductions in scrap/waste and packaging‑related complaints; train site teams on new materials and standards.
- Project management & reporting: Lead stage‑gate projects with timelines, risk management (FMEA), budget and stakeholders; report KPIs and maintain the category matrix (materials, risks, costs, footprint).
QualificationsAcademic Background
- Bachelor’s or master’s degree in engineering (Industrial Design, Materials, Chemistry, Mechanical Engineering) or a related field.
- High level of English.
Technical Skills
- 5 years of experience in Packaging/Materials R&D; in FMCG/CPG, pharmaceuticals, or related industries.
- 2+ years in a category management or technical leadership role for materials.
- Experience managing projects mainly for the industrial sector, preferably for FMCG.
- Knowledge of packaging testing and validation (standards, protocols, reports).
- Demonstrable experience in packaging industrialization: line scaling, line testing, and pack‑machine optimization.
