Software Engineer, Sustaining Engineering

This fast‑paced engineering role focuses on Linux‑based infrastructure and applications across hardware, virtualization, containerization, storage, networking, OpenStack, Kubernetes, and the open‑source software stack. The position requires troubleshooting, bug fixing, upstream collaboration, and delivery of high‑quality fixes to customers.

Location: Remote – teams operate worldwide and meet in person up to 10% of the time.

Responsibilities

- Resolve complex customer problems related to Ubuntu, kernel, Ceph, OpenStack, or Kubernetes and other open‑source software.
- Maintain close working relationships with Canonical’s Field, Support, and product engineering teams.
- Participate in upstream communities.
- Develop bug fixes, backport patches, and collaborate with upstream for inclusion.
- Review code produced by other engineers.
- Demonstrate sound technical judgment.
- Prioritize work and manage time effectively.
- Contribute to team discussions to improve processes, tools, and documentation.
- Communicate clearly and concisely in technical contexts.
- Travel internationally up to 10% of work time for meetings, events, and conferences.

Qualifications

- Professional experience as a software engineer.
- Background in Computer Science, STEM, or similar.
- Strong experience with Linux and at least one of the following: Ceph, OpenStack, Kubernetes, or other cloud technologies.




- Strong development‑level experience with at least one of Python, Go, C, or C++ on Linux.
- Ability to troubleshoot using debugging tools such as gdb.
- Familiarity with Git source‑code repositories and branch management.
- Exceptional academic track record.
- Willingness to travel up to four times a year for internal events.

- Passion for technology and collaborative work.
- Curiosity, flexibility, articulateness, accountability, and self‑motivation.
- Interest and experience with: Ubuntu Linux (kernel or user space), Kubernetes, OpenStack, Ceph, QEMU/KVM, LXC/LXD, Python, Go, C, PostgreSQL, MongoDB, Debian packaging, distributed systems.
