ph3About BSC /h3 pThe Barcelona Supercomputing Center - Centro Nacional de Supercomputación (BSC-CNS) is the leading supercomputing center in Spain. It houses MareNostrum, one of the most powerful supercomputers in Europe, was a founding and hosting member of the former European HPC infrastructure PRACE (Partnership for Advanced Computing in Europe), and is now hosting entity for EuroHPC JU, the Joint Undertaking that leads large-scale investments and HPC provision in Europe. The mission of BSC is to research, develop and manage information technologies in order to facilitate scientific progress. BSC combines HPC service provision and RD into both computer and computational science (life, earth and engineering sciences) under one roof, and currently has over 1000 staff from 60 countries. /p pJob Referencebr/387_26_ES_EDD_RE2br/Positionbr/Earth data strategist (RE2)br/Closing Datebr/Monday, 31 August, 2026br/bReference: /b 387_26_ES_EDD_RE2br/bJob title: /b Earth data strategist (RE2) /p h3Look At The BSC Experience /h3 pBSC-CNS YouTube Channel /p pLet's stay connected with BSC Folks! /p pWe are particularly interested for this role in the strengths and lived experiences of women and underrepresented groups to help us avoid perpetuating biases and oversights in science and IT research. We value diversity of experiences and skills, and you could bring unique perspectives to our team.
/p h3Context And Mission /h3 pThe Earth Sciences department from the Barcelona Supercomputing Center curates and manages a data archive of close to 8PB of data from observations, models, reanalyses, and derived products, based on external sources or generated in the department. Scientists from different scientific groups rely on this shared data archive curated by the Data and Diagnostics Team (DDT, composed of around 20 members), which is in charge, among other activities, of downloading, standardizing, checking, and curating the data into standardized netcdf format fitting the community standards and the requirements from the tools developed by the group. /p pThe successful candidate will join the Data and Diagnostics Team to elaborate a long-term strategy on the data archiving and ingestion pipelines, elaborating the strategy based on the state-of-the-art analysis tools, storage formats (Zarr, for example), the requirements from the users of the department (AI-readiness, compression, operationalization,...) and the strategy used in institutions similar to the BSC, including travels to the corresponding institutions to gain in-depth understanding of their strategy. /p pThe successful candidate will be in charge of proposing possible reconversion of the current data archive preserving compatibility with the existing tools and data pipelines,
while she/he will collaborate with other members of the team to implement the new data ingestion/curation pipelines. /p h3Key Duties /h3 ul liDesign a strategy for the long-term evolution of the NetCDF data archive of the Earth Sciences department /li liInvestigate with internal users and external institutions the needs and existing landscape for Earth data storage /li /ul h3Requirements /h3 ul liEducation ul liHaving a Master's degree in Computer Science, Data Science, Physics, or a related discipline /li /ul /li liEssential Knowledge and Professional Experience ul liat least 3 to 5 years experience in a Earth Sciences data environment /li /ul /li liCompetences ul liData management in a Linux-based environment /li liEarth data formats and tools /li liPython /li liCommunication skills to get the requirements from the users /li liHigh performance computing environments /li liManagement of high data volumes (~PB) /li /ul /li /ul h3Conditions /h3 ul liThe position will be located at BSC within the Earth Sciences Department /li liWe offer a full-time contract (35h/week), a good working environment, a highly stimulating environment with state-of-the-art infrastructure, versátil working hours, extensive training plan, restaurant tickets, private health insurance, support to the relocation procedures /li liDuration: Open-ended contract due to technical and scientific activities linked to the project and budget duration /li liHolidays: 22 days of holidays + 6 personal days + 24th and 31st of December per our collective agreement /li liSalary: we offer a competitive salary commensurate with the qualifications and experience of the candidate and according to the cost of living in Barcelona /li liStarting date: as soon as possible /li /ul /p #J-18808-Ljbffr
