ph3Job Summary /h3pUnder the general supervision of the Manager of Perioperative Services, and the direct supervision of a Registered Nurse, the Surgical Technologist is responsible for filling the surgical scrub role on all types of minor and major surgical procedures dependent on types of minor and major surgical procedures dependent on individual competencies in each surgical specialty. Assist physicians and nurses in various medical and technical procedures. BLS Certification. /liliCertification as a Surgical Technologist preferred. /liliTwo years previous experience as an operating room technician desired. /li /ulh3OCCUPATIONAL EXPOSURE /h3pCategory I exposure to blood borne pathogens, frequent exposure to chemical hazards and may encounter radiation hazards. /ph3Responsibilities /h3ulliDecision making concerning equipment and/or instrumentation sterilization. /liliBio hazardous waste disposal per institutional policy. /liliHousekeeping duties per OR housekeeping policies. /liliPatient care and patient flow. /liliMaintains patient confidentiality. /liliCreates a safe environment in which surgery may take place. /liliUses medical equipment in a safe manner. /liliHelps provide cost effective patient care.
/liliImplements principles of medical and surgical asepsis in accordance with recognized national standards and hospital specific policies and procedures. /liliProvides physical safety for the patient. /liliAccounts for sponges, needles, instruments, and other potential foreign bodies. /liliAssists surgeon in scrubbed cases. /liliPulls supplies for upcoming cases. /liliDemonstrates cooperative work attitude towards and with coworkers, employees, management, patients, visitors and physicians. /liliMaintains a safe work environment in compliance with OSHA guidelines and infection control standards. /liliDemonstrates knowledge of Instrument Processing from decontamination to storage of sterile packages utilizing Manufacturer’s instructions for use. /liliAdheres strictly to facility’s policy regarding Immediate Use Sterilization. /liliChecks room for cleanliness, availability of supplies and equipment for all assigned cases at the beginning of each day. /liliUtilizes surgeon preference card to select packs, supplies and instruments. /liliPerforms surgical hand scrub and dons sterile gown and gloves according to gowning and gloving policy. /liliMaintains proper sterile technique when gowning and gloving surgeon and draping patient. /liliPerforms sponge, instrument, and needle counts according to count policy. /liliHandles specimen per established policy.
/liliTransports instruments to decontamination area utilizing appropriate technique and in compliance with established policies and procedures. /liliPuts unused sterile supplies and instruments away at the end of the day. /liliRestocks operating rooms to established PAR levels. /liliAttends 100% of department meetings or documents review of materials presented. /liliKeeps supervisor apprised of work progress. /liliComply with facility Standards of Behavior and complete all required education assignments within the designated timeline. /li /ulh3PHYSICAL DEMANDS /h3ulliThe physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
