Senior BESS Operations & Maintenance Manager

Overview

A leading international energy infrastructure company is seeking a Senior BESS Operations & Maintenance Manager to oversee the technical operation and maintenance of utility-scale battery energy storage systems across multiple sites in Europe and the UK.

This is a senior technical leadership role requiring strong hands-on BESS expertise, operational oversight experience, and the ability to manage maintenance teams, client relationships, and performance optimisation across a multi-site portfolio.

The successful candidate will have significant experience in battery energy storage operations and maintenance, including preventative maintenance, troubleshooting, warranty repairs, and commissioning support.

Key responsibilities

- Lead operations and maintenance activities across multiple utility-scale BESS sites.
- Ensure battery energy storage systems are maintained to a high operational standard through planned preventative maintenance, inspections, annual testing, troubleshooting, and reactive maintenance.
- Provide remote and on-site technical support for commissioning, testing, performance verification, and fault resolution.
- Develop, implement, and continuously improve standard operating procedures (SOPs), maintenance strategies, and technical documentation.
- Coordinate internal and external technical resources to ensure efficient project execution and high levels of customer satisfaction.
- Build technical capability within the O&M; team through competency assessments, training plans, mentoring, and knowledge sharing.
- Ensure all maintenance activities comply with local regulations, health and safety legislation, and company safety standards.
- Oversee spare parts management, warehouse operations, and local supply chain activities related to maintenance operations.
- Monitor system performance using SCADA and remote monitoring platforms, analyse operational data,



and identify opportunities for performance improvement.
- Ensure consistency, quality, and operational excellence across all managed sites.
- Provide regular technical and operational reporting on system performance, incidents, maintenance activities, and improvement initiatives.
- Formal qualification in an electrical engineering or electrical maintenance discipline.
- Significant operations and maintenance experience within the battery energy storage (BESS) or utility-scale renewable energy sector.
- Strong working knowledge of battery systems, battery management systems (BMS), HVAC systems, fire suppression systems, and associated balance-of-plant equipment.
- Practical experience with preventative maintenance, fault diagnostics, troubleshooting, and warranty repair activities.
- Experience with SCADA systems, remote monitoring platforms, networking, and diagnostic software.
- Strong IT skills including Microsoft Office applications and technical configuration tools.
- Valid certification for safe electrical and on-site work in accordance with relevant European standards.
- Willingness to travel regularly across Europe and the UK, including overnight and international travel.

Preferred experience

- Experience in remote monitoring or network operations centre environments.
- Previous experience working with Tier 1 BESS manufacturers or major energy storage technology providers.
- European electrical or operational safety certifications.
- Strong understanding of HV/LV electrical systems, power electronics, inverters, transformers, and grid-connected energy infrastructure.
