Professor María Dolores Mesa García, from the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology II at the University of Granada, welcomes postdoctoral candidatesinterested inapplying for a Marie Skłodowska-Curie Postdoctoral Fellowship (MSCA-PF)in 2026 at this University.

Brief description of the institution: The University of Granada (UGR), founded in 1531, is one of the largest and most important universities in Spain. With more than 57,000 undergraduate and postgraduate students and almost 7,000 members of staff, the UGR offers 97 undergraduate degrees, 157 master’s degrees (7 of which are double degrees) and 28 doctoral programmes via its 124 departments and nearly 50 centers.

Accordingly, the UGR offers one of the most extensive and diverse ranges of higher education programmes in Spain.

The UGR has been awarded with the "Human Resources Excellence in Research (HRS4R)", which reflectsthe institution’s commitment to continuously improve its human resource policies in line with the European Charter for Researchers and the Code of Conduct for the Recruitment of Researchers. Artificial Intelligence and Dentistry & Oral Sciences (ranked between 51th-75th position), Computer Science & Engineering, Education and Hospitality & Tourism Management (between 76-100th position), and in the areas of Food Science & Technology and Business Administration (between 101-150th position).

A little lower in the ranking, the UGR also stands out in the areas of Earth Sciences, Law, Management, Nursing, Psychology and Statistics, in which the UGR is positioned in the 151-200th position.
Internationally, the University of Granada is firmly committed to its participation in the calls of the Framework Programme of the European Union.

For the duration of the prevoius Framework Programme, Horizon 2020, the UGR obtained a totalof124 projectswith a total funding of more than€30 million. For the current Framework Programme, Horizon Europe, the UGR has obtained136 projects, so far, with a total funding of more than€38 million.

Brief description of the Centre/Research Group: The research group “Biochemistry of Nutrition.

Therapeutic implications”, BioNIT (CTS-461; http://bionit.ugr.es/ ), was established in 1996 by Dr.
Ángel Gil Hernández.
It is currently formed by 14 people, the PI being Dr.
Luis Fontana.

Its research is carried out at the Institute of Nutrition and Food Technology “José Mataix Verdú” (Biomedical Research Center, PTS) of the University.

At present, the group focuses its research on three thematic areas: 1.

Obesity. The group is part of the node CB15/00131 within the CIBER of Physiopathology of Obesity and Nutrition (CIBERobn), and since 2008 we have been members of RETIC-SAMID (Maternal, Child and Developmental Health).
His research focuses on the study of the molecular basis of childhood obesity, incorporating the use of different omics technologies to identify the mechanisms of action and risk factors of this disease.

1. Probiotics and intestinal microbiota.





Since 2008 we have been working with several probiotic strains isolated from the feces of exclusively breast-fed newborns.
Studies have been carried out to characterize the strains, evaluate their safety and anti-inflammatory effects in animal models and in human clinical studies.

1. Clinical and experimental evaluation of functional foods.

Our research has focused on the evaluation of the effects on cardiometabolic health of different types of dietary fats, such as extra virgin olive oil, antioxidants present in foods and dietary patterns such as the Mediterranean diet in various experimental and clinical studies in humans with different pathophysiological situations.

The applicant would join the DIVERSE project (FIS-ISCIII project PI22/01476) whose objective is to evaluate metabolomic changes related to obesity complications, to search for new risk biomarkers in three cohorts (children, adolescents and adults).

The project will analyze the interrelationship between biomarkers of diet, physical activity, sedentary behaviors and sleep using metabolomic analyses and a circadian strategy at different life stages.
Lifestyle-related cohort data are available.

The project will conduct untargeted metabolomic analyses, followed by targeted metabolomic validation and quantification of novel biomarkers and metabolic fingerprints of eating patterns, physical activity, sedentary behaviors and sleep, across different life stages.

The aim is to assess these associations considering factors that determine them and including consumption moments as part of the circadian assessment, identifying the metabolic fingerprints of these behaviors, in order to establish healthy lifestyle recommendations that improve quality of life and prevent the development of cardiometabolic diseases.

The group has applied for a new project in the current FIS-ISCIII call (OMICORALS Project; PI26/01300) whose objective is the multiomic approach (proteomics, metagenomics and genomics) to assess the risk of obesity development in preschoolers of the CORALS follow-up cohort, taking into account environmental and lifestyle conditions.

The applicant will also be able to continue his/her research on this project.

Therefore, we are looking for someone with expertise in bioinformatics, biostatistics and multi-omic data analysis.
