The group of Antennas, Radar and Optical Communications at the Universidade de Vigo (Spain) is looking for an ambitious and passionate candidate with an interest in pursuing a PhD in theoretical photonics under the supervision of Dr. Diego Martínez Solís (Ramón y Cajal Fellow), within the research topic “STUDY OF NOVEL WAVE PHENOMENA IN PHOTONIC SPACETIME METAMATERIALS”, the “hot” topic of light/matter interactions in the presence of time modulations and discontinuities (“temporal metamaterials” in the jargon of the community). This is a theoretical basic research on light-matter interactions in the presence of temporal inhomogeneities, so the approach of the foreseen research activities will be fundamental Science: unveiling new mechanisms of wave interactions in out-of-the-box toy models that harness space-time symmetries and dualities (or the lack thereof). Besides, no commercial software (e.g. COMSOL Multiphysics) will be used in principle, since the research group uses their own in-house solvers and also relies on (semi-)analytic solutions whenever possible.
What we offer?
We offer a 3-year PhD contract within a monthly gross salary of 1.750 €
The doctoral candidate will be enrolled in a Doctoral Programme at the Universidade de Vigo throughout the entire duration of the project.
Requirements:
- Degree in Physics or Electrical/Photonics Engineering
- Master’s degree (or equivalent qualification) in Electrical/Electromagnetic/Photonic Engineering or Physics/Quantum
Desired qualifications and attributes:
- Technically sound in Physics and Mathematics
- Experience in electromagnetics/photonics and/or programming of numerical models
- Intermediate/advanced user of one of the following: MATLAB, Wolfram Mathematica, C/C++, Python, Julia, etc.
- Scientific publications on the topic of electromagnetics/photonics
Important remark: This is a Call for expressions of interest
The Universidade de Vigo has its own official application process, hiring on the basis of merit and is strongly committed to equity and diversity within its community. All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to gender, ethnicity, religion, sexual orientation, national origin, disability status, or any other characteristic protected by law.
The process has the following stages (chronologically):
1. The candidate submits an expression of interest.
2. Once the official application process starts, we will send an email to the candidate, who will proceed to the submission of his/her formal application. Please, bear in mind that the application process is mandatory and will only be open for 10 working days.
3. The selection committee will evaluate only the received candidatures through the official application procedure and will announce the shortlist of candidates that will pass to the next stage.
4. The shortlisted candidates will be interviewed online by the committee.
5. The selected candidate will be notified as soon as possible after the interviews.
