In partnership with inScrubbs The Weekly Nursing Rundown

- June 21–26, 2026

You made it to the end of June. If your unit is anything like every unit right now, you’re short two nurses, the A/C is debatable, and someone in the break room just said “it’s giving December energy.” We see you. This week: AI is officially a bargaining table issue, a federal judge just handed nursing students a massive win on student loans, Ohio is making moves on staffing — and we have a stat from a Nurse.org poll that will make you close your eyes and take a deep breath. Let’s get into it.

Federal Judge Blocks Rule That Would Have Slashed Nursing Student Loan Access

Breaking this week: a federal judge temporarily blocked the rule that would have excluded nursing from “professional degree” status — a designation that determines whether grad students can borrow up to $200K or just $100K. The rule was set to kick in July 1. Nearly 500 nurses had already rallied in D.C. to fight the cap, and 25 states plus the ANA filed lawsuits. The judge sided with nursing orgs, finding the Dept. of Education overstepped. The fight isn’t over, but this is a real win.

? Need to know Nurses Unions Are Drawing a Line on AI — And Winning

From Marketplace: nurses’ unions across the country are now bargaining for AI guardrails right alongside pay and ratios. A Michigan union demanded AI protections in its new contract. NYSNA nurses in New York won AI safeguards during their historic strike earlier this year. The ANA released an AI consensus report calling for nurse-led oversight. The core demand: AI should not override clinical judgment, replace bedside nurses, or be deployed without nurse input.

? Oh wow

85% of Nurses Experienced Workplace Violence. Most Employers Did Nothing.

NNU surveyed over 1,200 nurses and the numbers are brutal: 85% experienced at least one form of workplace violence in the past year. Nearly a quarter were physically injured. And 42.5% say their employer doesn’t change practices afterward. One silver lining: some San Diego hospitals are reporting gains from new safety initiatives.

But the survey makes one thing clear — most hospitals still aren’t doing enough.

Ohio Nurses Push for Mandatory Staffing Ratios — Again

Over half of Ohio’s direct-care nurses say they’ve considered leaving because of patient loads. Two bills — HB 521 and HB 535 — would establish mandatory nurse-to-patient ratios, but neither has made it out of committee. California remains the only state with enforceable ratios. Hospital groups argue mandates limit flexibility; nurses on the ground say the current system is failing.

Ohio Senate Passes “Uber for Nursing” Gig-Staffing Bill

Senate Bill 423 passed unanimously, creating rules for app-based platforms that match nurses with short-staffed facilities. It also sets criteria for when those workers qualify as 1099 independent contractors. The ONA says it adds needed protections but warns it shouldn’t replace direct hiring. Worth watching — other states may follow Ohio’s lead.

Ambient AI Is Coming for Nursing Workflow — But It Won’t Look Like the Doctor Version

Nursing documentation is nothing like physician documentation — nurses work through 600 to 800 discrete data points per shift across multiple flowsheets. That means ambient AI tools built for doctors don’t just transfer over. Nursing leaders say the next generation of tools needs to be co-designed with bedside nurses, not bolted on from physician-facing platforms. Early pilots are saving up to 36 minutes per 12-hour shift. The catch: it only works when leadership actually commits.

Why Nurses Still Can’t Get Workers’ Comp for Infectious Diseases the Way Firefighters Can

Firefighters and cops get “presumptive eligibility” — meaning certain injuries are automatically assumed to be work-related. Nurses? They have to prove it every time, even though RNs experience 95% more work-related injuries and illnesses than the average U.S. worker. California’s SB 632 is trying to change that, but it faces hospital group opposition. This one’s a sleeper issue that affects every nurse who’s ever caught something on the job.

America’s Most Trusted Profession — 25 Years Running. Time dove deep into why patients trust nurses more than doctors. Gallup’s latest poll: 75% of Americans rate nurses’ honesty as “very high” or “high.” Doctors sit at 57%. Experts say it comes down to one thing: you’re there. At 2 a.m. At the bedside. During the fear and the pain.

Doctors treat the disease — you live it with the patient.

? Screwed 600 Nurses Shared Their Worst Patient Ratio. Brace Yourself. Nurse.org asked a simple question. The median worst-ever ratio was 16:1. In long-term care? 46:1. Some nurses reported 60, 80, even 120 patients on a single overnight shift. One new grad described their first night shift — 16 surgical patients, alone, at 21 years old. These aren’t hypotheticals. These are Tuesdays.

⚡ Quick Hits

→ Losing one nurse can cost society up to $3.67M, according to a new Becker’s framework analysis. That’s not a typo. Experience, institutional knowledge, patient trust — it all walks out the door.

→ Nurses with higher degrees are more likely to leave. A new study flagged in Becker’s found that advanced-degree nurses have higher turnover — a finding that complicates the “just get more education” narrative.

→ Why nurses leave and what hospitals can actually do about it. HealthExec breaks down the retention playbook — spoiler: it’s not pizza parties.

→ U.S. health spending is projected to hit nearly $9 trillion by 2034. Let that sink in while you’re waiting for your 2% raise.

→ FBI offers $150K reward for healthcare fraudster who allegedly ran a $100M Medicare genetic testing scam, cut off her ankle monitor, and fled to Vietnam on a private plane with a fake passport. You cannot make this up.

→ In a separate case, feds charged a clinic owner with nearly $1 billion in fraudulent Medicare claims out of the Houston suburbs. The DOJ’s 2026 healthcare fraud takedown is the largest in history: 455 defendants, $6.5B in false claims.

→ An Iowa nurse was accused of theft and being under the influence at work. A reminder that diversion is a patient safety issue and an illness — and the system for catching it still has gaps.

Forward this email to 3 nurse friends who need a laugh (or a stiff drink). We’re picking one reader this week to treat to a serious caffeine fix on us. (Because hospital coffee doesn’t count.)

? The Discharge Lounge

Doctors and nurses revealed “dark secrets” about their jobs online — and honestly, if you’ve worked a single shift, none of them are secrets. But the comments section is deeply entertaining in a “yep, that tracks” kind of way.

A 41-year-old nursing assistant died on the operating table during surgery to remove toxic butt fillers in Colombia. She’d traveled from New York to have biopolymers removed after developing health complications. Biopolymer injections are banned in Colombia precisely because of risks like this. A tragic and cautionary story.

?? Editor’s note: This one sits at the intersection of nursing and personal health awareness — included because it’s getting significant attention in nursing communities this week.
