Engineering Management at Monzo Engineering Managers are part of cross-functional autonomous teams and groups. They work with Product Managers, back-end, web and mobile engineers, data scientists, designers, and subject matter experts.
Teams are organized into groups and collectives while keeping the line management structure shallow. Managers are accountable for the technical and delivery outcomes for their area, supporting and developing engineering talent and creating an inclusive environment.
Key Responsibilities
Lead a high performing senior team of engineers, supporting, coaching, and developing them throughout their careers.
Partner closely with Product, Design, Research, and Data to build product strategy, vision, and goals.
Take accountability for delivery across squads, collaborating with Technical Leads and Product Manager.
Foster a high bar for engineering excellence within the team.
Partner with senior engineers to drive technical initiatives that raise engineering practices.
Lead communication with stakeholders from other teams, creating focus space for engineers.
Collaborate with the wider engineering organization to contribute to company-wide best managerial and technical practices and standards.
Qualifications
Experience as a software engineer, with strong technical and delivery background.
Experience on user‑facing mobile products and discussion of product impact, strategy, road‑mapping, and goal setting.
Founder mindset, ownership of business impact.
Understanding of high‑performing engineering teams and ability to chart a path to success.
Comfortable with ambiguous problem areas and high degree of autonomy.

Interview Process
Recruiter Call (30 min) – discussion of experience and Monzo.
Initial Call (1 h) – discussion of people leadership, product delivery, and technical leadership.
Loop Stage (3 h 30 min) – three 60‑min interviews over 1–2 days plus a 30‑min reverse interview.
Team and Org Management (1 h) – example‑based interview with engineering leaders.
System Design (1 h) – technical white‑boarding exercise with a Staff or Principal Engineer.
Behavioral (1 h) – example‑based interview focused on people leadership style and core behaviours.
Chat with an Engineering Leader (30 min) – two‑way interview for questions.
