Exhibition: Forgotten Fleece Tales

Forgotten Fleece Tales is a touring Scottish exhibition of sustainable textile arts. It focuses on the theme of wool as an undervalued resource, and demonstrates the material’s enduring beauty and versatility.

Twenty artists from across Scotland were asked to make pieces using “waste wool” – raw fleeces that would otherwise be consigned to the scrap heap, industrial mill waste such as selvedge and cone ends, or repurposed wool from discarded textiles.

The result was an exciting exploration of the place wool holds in Scotland’s history and heritage, and how it can be reimagined as part of a sustainable future for fashion, design, architecture, conservation and more.

The theme of “forgotten” fleece comments on how once-valued natural wool has fallen by the wayside in this fast-fashion world, with hundreds of tonnes of UK fleece going to waste every year.

This theme is highlighted by unique pieces of short fiction written for each artwork by folklorist and author Alicia Adams, which link Scottish wool to the country’s folklore, history and landscapes.

The exhibition at Verdant Works will include original artworks by Forgotten Fleece Tales creator and curator Sarah-Rosenthal Almirall, as well as Sandra Junele, Overside Wool, Janet Hughes, Reet Wyatt, Rachel Challoner, Pam Watson and Val O’ Regan.
