Position: PostDoctoral Researcher for climate services – Climate predictions (R2)

Overview The Barcelona Supercomputing Center – Centro Nacional de Supercomputación (BSC‑CNS) is the leading supercomputing center in Spain, home to MareNostrum, one of Europe’s most powerful supercomputers.

The Earth System Services

Group (ESS) within the Earth Sciences Department researches the impacts of weather, atmospheric chemistry and climate on socio‑economic sectors such as renewable energy, agriculture, water resources, urban development and climate risk management. ESS is looking for a highly motivated postdoctoral researcher to contribute to next‑generation climate services, with a primary focus on renewable energy while supporting applications in agriculture and water management.

Key Duties

Perform user‑oriented research and post‑processing of climate predictions to develop climate services products.

Develop automated workflows for data loading, post‑processing, evaluation, visualization and persistence, following coding standards and testing practices, deployable on HPC systems.

Publish results in peer‑reviewed scientific papers and present at international conferences.

Collaborate with scientists in the group and department to foster synergies.

Participate in project proposal preparation and EU project work‑package management, including teleconferences, workshops, meetings and deliverable writing.

Engage with users of climate services.

Qualifications

Education

Degree in Physics, Environmental Sciences, Mathematics (or equivalent).

PhD in atmospheric sciences, applied statistics or related field.

Essential Knowledge and Professional Experience

Experience handling, analysing and validating large climate model datasets.

Experience with climatic statistical analyses.

Experience working with sub‑seasonal, seasonal or decadal climate predictions.





Proficiency in scientific programming (e.g. R, Python) and familiarity with UNIX environments.

Strong written and verbal communication skills in English, particularly for scientific publications.

Ability to work in a multidisciplinary and international team setting.

Additional Knowledge and Professional Experience

Experience using climate information to support the energy sector (e.g. climate indicators for renewable energy production).

Research expertise in climate science, climate impacts on society, or climate risk is encouraged; experience in energy, agriculture or water management companies or consultancy is also welcome.

Knowledge of statistical downscaling, multi‑model combination techniques, bias adjustment techniques or tropical/extratropical teleconnections will be positively evaluated.

Conditions

Location: BSC Earth Sciences Department.

Full‑time contract (35 h/week) with adaptable working hours, extensive training plan, restaurant tickets, private health insurance, and relocation support.

Open‑ended contract linked to project and budget duration.

Holidays: 22 days + 6 personal days + weekends on 24 / 31 December per collective agreement.
