Overview The Atmospheric Composition group in the Earth Science department of BSC-CNS seeks a research support engineer to develop, maintain, and update the in‑house atmospheric emission model HERMES. The role covers database development, methodology improvement, model validation and support of air quality modelling activities. The engineer will collaborate with atmospheric scientists, computational engineers and data providers to produce emission databases and contribute to scientific outputs.

Key Duties

Update and develop the databases underlying the HERMES emission model

Develop methodologies to update and improve emission estimates

Provide quality assessment, evaluation and services of the HERMES emission model

Support the implementation and application of the emission modelling tools in air‑quality modelling activities

Interact with computational engineers and atmospheric composition scientists

Support dissemination activities including contributions to peer‑reviewed publications, internal and external meetings and conferences

Requirements

Education

Master’s degree in physical sciences or engineering (e.g., Chemistry, Meteorology, Physics, Environmental Engineering, Chemical Engineering)

Essential Knowledge and Professional Experience

Experience in emission and/or air quality modelling





Experience with GIS data and tools

Experience in programming and code development (Python and/or R)

Experience working in Unix/Linux environments

Fluent English, both written and spoken

Additional Knowledge and Professional Experience

Experience in similar fields will be valued

Experience with revision control systems (e.g., SVN or Git)

Knowledge of atmospheric science data formats (GRIB, NetCDF)

Competences

Very good interpersonal skills

Excellent written and verbal communication skills

Ability to take initiative, prioritize and work under set deadlines

Ability to work both independently and in a team

Conditions

Location: BSC, Earth Sciences Department

Full‑time contract (35 h/week)

State‑of‑the‑art infrastructure, adaptable working hours, extensive training plan

Restaurant tickets, private health insurance, relocation support

Duration: Open‑ended contract linked to project and budget duration

Holidays: 22 days + 6 personal days + 24th and 31st December (per collective agreement)

Salary: Competitive and commensurate with qualifications and experience

Starting date: 15/9/2026
