Job Title Surgical Technologist

Supervision Received Physician and/or Registered Nurse

General Summary of Duties Surgical technologists, also called scrubs and surgical or operating room technicians, assist in surgical operations under the supervision of surgeons, registered nurses, or other surgical personnel. They are members of operating room teams, which most commonly include surgeons, anesthesiologists, circulating nurses, and other support staff.

Education, Experience, and Requirements

Graduate of an accredited surgical technologist program; or have completed an appropriate training program for surgical technologists in the Armed Forces; or be completing duties related to their employment by the federal government; or have equivalent training or experience.

Prefer 1–2 years clinical experience in an operating room setting; may accept 0–2 years of clinical experience in a related field.

Must be certified in Basic Life Support (BLS).

Essential Functions

Prepare and maintain medical equipment and instrumentation for surgical procedures.

Set up the sterile field to include surgical instruments, equipment, sterile drapes, and solutions before an operation.

Follow state and federal facility regulations when attending to patients.

Perform pre-procedure preparations of the patient’s skin and body.

Complete a safety check prior to the start of the procedure on appropriate equipment and supplies.

Assemble both sterile and non‑sterile equipment and ensure it is working properly.

Assist with preparation for patient procedure as needed.

Transport patients to the procedure room and assist with positioning on the procedure table.

Drape the patient with surgical drapes per procedure.

Pass instruments and sterile supplies to surgeons and surgeon assistants.

Retract, cut sutures, and perform other functions under physician supervision.





Participate in the count of sponges, needles, supplies, and instruments based on the type of procedure performed.

Help prepare specimens and assist with disposition of specimens.

Apply dressings.

Assist with patient transfer from the procedure bed to the stretcher post‑procedure.

Clean and restock the procedure room.

Pull supplies and instruments for upcoming procedures.

Assist with maintenance of physician preference cards and inventory management.

Assist with decontamination, cleaning, sterilization, and performance of quality testing related to sterilization and high‑level disinfection.

Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

High School Diploma or GED required.

Graduate of a surgical technician program with documented experience.

Basic Life Support (BLS) prerequisite.

2 years of experience in the field or in a related area.

Knowledge of commonly used concepts, practices, and procedures within a particular field.

Demonstrated skills in verbal and written English communications for safe and effective patient care and to meet documentation standards.

Must be computer literate with basic fundamental computer skills required for essential job‑related duties.

Physical/Mental Demands

Ability to be on your feet for long periods and lift or turn disabled patients.

Requires sitting and standing associated with a normal office environment.

Ability to concentrate for periods of up to four hours.





Ability to communicate verbally both in person and on the telephone.

Ability to use a computer keyboard and view a computer monitor.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Must demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients in the center.

Demonstrates ability to utilize recognized channels of communication.

Demonstrates ability to maintain good interpersonal relationships with patients, co‑workers, and other health team members.

Working Conditions Surgical technologists work in clean, well‑lighted, well‑ventilated environments. Must stand for long periods and remain alert during operations. At times they may be exposed to communicable diseases and unpleasant sights, odors, and materials. Occasional evening and/or weekend work may be required.
