HSE Manager – Spain (Health, Safety, Environment & Security)
Location: Navalmoral de la Mata, Cáceres (Extremadura), Spain
Company Overview: AESC is a integral leader in lithium-ion and LFP battery technology, with a growing presence in Japan, the UK, France, China, and the USA. We are expanding in Spain with a €1-billion gigafactory in Extremadura, scheduled to open by 2026, creating up to 900 direct jobs in its first phase. The Spanish facility aims to be the country's first net-zero industrial park gigafactory, aligning with our mission to lead sustainable battery manufacturing.
Role Purpose: The HSE Manager in Spain will establish and lead a world-class HSE function supporting existing operations and the new gigafactory.
You will ensure legal compliance, promote a zero-incident safety culture, mitigate risks, and enhance environmental stewardship across all Spanish operations. This is a hands-on leadership role in a high-growth, high-risk environment.
Key Responsibilities:
1. HSE Strategy & Compliance: Develop and maintain EHSS programs aligned with Spanish/EU legislation, ISO 45001, ISO 14001, and local safety codes. Monitor laws, update policies, lead permit applications, and ensure full compliance. Collaborate with the global HSE team to implement internal policies in Spain.
2. Risk Management & Incident Response: Support design stages from an environmental, health, and safety perspective. Conduct safety risk assessments, environmental audits, safety tours, and evaluate suppliers. Lead incident investigations, root cause analyses, and regulatory reporting. Maintain emergency plans and conduct drills.
3. Training & Cultural Development: Deliver multilingual HSE training covering forklift safety, fire hazards, PPE, etc. Promote a proactive safety culture through talks, committees,
and engagement metrics.
4. Environmental & Sustainability Leadership: Implement waste management, energy efficiency, water usage, and GHG tracking programs aligned with net-zero goals. Ensure compliance with EU REACH, CLP, Spanish permits, and environmental authorizations.
5. Security & Regulatory Interface: Coordinate with authorities for safety licensing and inspections. Oversee physical security measures related to battery technology, including storage and access control.
6. Team Leadership & Reporting: Report KPIs monthly to the Global Head of EHSS. Ensure HSE data integration with company systems and dashboards.
Required Experience & Expertise:
- Over 10 years of HSE experience in industrial or manufacturing settings.
- At least 5 years in leadership or country-level roles within complex, matrix organizations.
- Proven management of ISO 45001 and 14001 systems, with successful audits.
- Strong risk assessment, incident investigation, and emergency preparedness skills.
- Deep knowledge of Spanish and EU regulations (Seveso III, REACH, CLP, WEEE, EU Battery Regulation) and experience with permitting and regulatory interfaces.
- Hands-on leadership during capital projects and gigafactory launches, especially in battery or clean-tech industries.
- Experience in developing multilingual safety training programs and delivering safety campaigns.
- Proficiency in monitoring HSE KPIs and reporting to senior leadership.
- Excellent cross-functional stakeholder engagement skills.
- Background in sustainability and waste compliance related to battery materials is advantageous.
